Methodology

Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA)

Useful for laboratory diagnosis of acute phase infection with West Nile virus.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

CSF

Container/Tube: Sterile vial(s)
Specimen Volume: 1 mL of CSF

Collection Instructions: Label vial with patient’s legal name, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

Note:

1. Date of onset is required, and city or county of patient’s residence is requested.

2. Label specimen appropriately (CSF).

 

Serum

Container/Tube: Plain, red-top tube(s) or serum gel tube(s)

Specimen Volume: A minimum of 2 mL of serum

Day(s) Test Set Up

At least weekly; more frequently during seasonal outbreaks.

Reference Values

Negative

If equivocal (borderline), St. Louis encephalitis IgM serology will be performed.

Note: Negative results on specimens drawn <9 days of onset should have a convalescent serum tested if active disease is suspected.
