Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

PREFERRED SPECIMEN COLLECTION METHOD

BD VACUTAINER® Urine Complete Cup Kit: ( Instructions )

Container/Tube: BD VACUTAINER® Urine Complete Cup Kit, Item  #12564 
Specimen Volume: 15 mL (minimum volume: 5 mL) from a random urine collection

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect by clean-catch, midstream, catheter or U-Bag (pediatric).
2. Collect urine specimen in the cup provided in the Urine Compete Cup Kit.
3. Transfer the urine from the urine cup to the 8 ml and 4 ml tubes provided.
4. Fill the 8 ml tube completely and the 4ml tube to the minimum fill line.
5. Must send both tubes  |  Invert 8 to 10 times
6. *Use transfer straw only when necessary
7. The 8ml and 4ml Urine Transport tubes are the only accepted specimen transport medium.
8. Urine specimens transported by other means may be rejected for patient safety concerns.
9. Use additional Yellow Top Tubes for extra urine specimens.
10. Follow collection methodology to eliminate contamination.

Clean-Catch, Midstream Patient Instructions for Medical Practice Urine Collection

    Males

1. Cleanse glans with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride towelette.
2. Rinse area with water or wet gauze pads.
3. While holding foreskin retracted, begin voiding.
4. After several mL have passed, collect specimen without stopping flow of urine into the sterile container. Transfer urine from the sterile container and fill a yellow-top tube with 10 mL (minimum volume: 5 mL) of urine, and a grey-top tube with 4 mL (minimum volume: 1 mL) of urine.
5. Label tubes with patient’s legal name, date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

    Females

1. Thoroughly cleanse urethral area with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride towelette.
2. Rinse area with water or wet gauze pads.
3. While holding labia apart, begin voiding.
4. After several mL have passed, collect specimen without stopping flow of urine into the sterile container. Transfer urine from the sterile container and fill a yellow-top tube with 10 mL (minimum volume: 5 mL) of urine, and a grey-top tube with 4 mL (minimum volume: 1 mL) of urine.
5. Label tubes with patient’s legal name, date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

Alternate:

    Catheterized 

1. Do not collect urine from drainage bag.
2. Disinfect catheter collection port with 70% alcohol.
3. Use a needle and syringe to aseptically collect urine.
4. Transfer urine and fill a yellow-top tube with 10 mL (minimum volume: 5 mL) of urine, and a grey-top tube with 4 mL (minimum volume: 1 mL) of urine. 
5. Label tubes with patient’s legal name, date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

       Medical Staff members may also use a Catheter Collection Kit to obtain urine specimens.

PEDIATRIC AND PATIENT HOME COLLECTION

Container/Tube: Sterile Plastic container(s), Item  #261
Specimen Volume: 15 mL (minimum volume: 5 mL) from a random urine collection

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect by clean-catch, or U-Bag (pediatric). No preservative.
2. Follow collection methodology to eliminate contamination
3. Distribute to the Patent, the Urine Collection Instructions, sterile container (#261) and (3) benzalkonium chloride or castile soap towelettes.

Clean-Catch, Midstream - Patient Instructions for home collection

    Males

1. Cleanse glans with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride towelette.
2. Rinse area with water or wet gauze pads.
3. While holding foreskin retracted, begin voiding.
4. After several mL have passed, collect specimen without stopping flow of urine into a screw-capped, sterile container.
5. Label container with patient’s legal name, date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

    Females

1. Thoroughly cleanse urethral area with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride towelette.
2. Rinse area with water or wet gauze pads.
3. While holding labia apart, begin voiding.
4. After several mL have passed, collect specimen without stopping flow of urine into a screw-capped, sterile container.
5. Label container with patient’s legal name, date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen

Infants or Small Children

1. After cleansing appropriately, as above, place a sterile urine bag (U-Bag, Pedi-Bag) over labia or penis.
2. After 30 minutes, observe for presence of urine. If no urine is present, re-cleanse patient and attach a new bag.
3. Transfer specimen to a screw-capped, sterile container, #261
4. Label container with patient’s legal name, date of birth, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

Alternate:

    Catheterized

(This methodology should be used in an emergent situation, the use of the BD urine collection kit #12564 is preferred for accurate test results)
