Methodology
Direct Potentiometry
Sodium is freely filtered by the glomerulus, and the major route of sodium excretion is through the kidneys. Measurement of urinary sodium is used to determine volume depletion, acute renal failure, salt-losing nephritis, and in the differential diagnosis of hyponatremia.
Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube: Plastic urine container
Specimen Volume: 10 mL from a well-mixed, 24-hour urine collection
Collection Instructions: No preservative. Refrigerate specimen during collection.

1. Starting and ending times of collection and total volume are required.
