Important Note

Specimen must arrive within 48 hours of collection.

Note: 

The first-morning specimen of urine usually contains the highest concentration of hCG and is therefore the best specimen. However, any urine is suitable for testing.

Methodology

Immunoassay

Useful as a qualitative test to detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) for the early detection of pregnancy. A positive result indicates hCG levels of ≥20 mIU/mL in urine.

Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: Plastic urine container
Specimen Volume: 2 mL (minimum volume: 1 mL) from a first-morning urine collection.

Collection Instructions: No preservative.

Reference Values

Positive, negative, or weakly-positive.

hCG is not normally detected in the urine of healthy men and healthy nonpregnant women. A positive result indicates hCG levels of ≥20 mIU/mL.

 

Note: Repeat testing is recommended in 48 hours for a weakly-positive result.
