Test Code PREALB PREALBUMIN
Methodology
Immunoturbidimetric Assay
Prealbumin (transthyretin) is synthesized in the liver and acts as a transport protein for the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). It also transports vitamin A in association with retinol binding globulin.
Prealbumin is a negative acute-phase reactant with serum levels reflecting the synthesis capacity of the liver. Decreased levels are found in inflammation, malignancy, cirrhosis of the liver, and protein-wasting diseases of the gut or kidneys and malnutrition. Increased concentrations can be seen in Hodgkin’s disease or a prealbumin-producing tumor. Prealbumin is a sensitive indicator of nutritional status due to its short half-life (approximately 2 days), therefore, measurement can be useful for monitoring nutritional status and the efficacy of parenteral nutrition.
