Methodology
Enzymatic heterogeneous, competitive immunoassay
Phenobarbital is a commonly prescribed anti-convulsant used mainly in the treatment of seizure disorders, and is particularly useful for tonic-clonic, partial focal motor, temporal lobe, and febrile seizures. Phenobarbital measurements are used to monitor patient compliance and therapy, and to diagnose potential overdose.
Specimen Requirements
Collection Container/Tube:
Preferred: Serum gel (SST)
Acceptable Alternates: Red top serum, Green top plasma (Lithium Heparin)
Specimen Volume: 1.0 mL serum
Minimum Volume: 0.25 mL serum
Collection Instructions:
1. Serum or plasma gel tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection.
2. Red-top tubes should be centrifuged, and the serum aliquoted into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection.
3. Sampling may be done any time during the dosage interval after steady state. However, when making comparative measurements, the sampling times should be consistent. If toxicity is suspected, then specimens can be drawn at any time.
