Test Code PFA-P2Y12 PLATELET FUNCTION P2Y12

Important Note

  1. Specimen Must Arrive to the Laboratory within 2 hours of draw.
  2. DO NOT send specimen through the pneumatic tube system, please hand delivery to the Laboratory.
  3. DO NOT Centrifuge.

Special Note:

  1. Patients who have received AGGRASTAT® or  Integrillin in past 2 days or ReoPro® in past 2 weeks should not be tested.
  2. This test is not recommended for children <17 years of age.

Methodology

Rapid optical detection method detects binding and aggregation of fibrinogen-coated beads by activated platelets to measure platelet function in the presence of P2Y12 inhibitors (such as clopidogrel or prasugrel).

Useful for evaluating platelet function in patients who are administered P2Y12 inhibitors such as PLAVIX® or EFFIENTTM. May aid in decisions to initiate or delay surgery or percutaneous cardiac catheterization procedures, make preparations for blood product use if surgery cannot be postponed, or to monitor the effectiveness of P2Y12 anti-platelet therapy.

Specimen Requirements

Contact the KRMC Laboratory at 406-752-1737 to obtain special tubes:

Greiner Bio-One Vacuette® 2-mL partial-fill collection tubes with 3.2% sodium citrate

Container/Tube: Greiner Bio-One partial-fill Vacuette® tube(s)
Specimen Volume: 2 mL of blood
Collection Instructions:

  1. Always draw specimen BEFORE drawing lavender-top tube, as EDTA interferes with testing.
  2. Minimize amount of time that the tourniquet is applied prior to filling tube.
  3. Perform venipuncture using 21-gauge or larger needle.
  4. Draw at least 2 mL of blood into 1 blue-top sodium citrate discard tube.  Label as discard.
  5. Using two 2-mL Greiner Bio-One partial-fill Vacuette® tubes, allow blood to fill to black line (1/2 tube).
  6. Do NOT under fill, Do NOT overfill.
  7. Number the tubes as to the order of collection.
  8. Immediately, gently invert citrated tube, containing whole blood, 5 times to mix blood with anticoagulant and prevent clotting.
  • Do not centrifuge.
  • Hand deliver to laboratory. (Do not use pneumatic tube system).

Specimen Rejection

  1. Hemolyzed or clotted specimen.
  2. Centrifuged specimen.
