Methodology
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)
Useful for prenatal screening for neural tube defect and Down syndrome when performed in conjunction with AFP QUAD “Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Quad Test, Serum” as part of a maternal serum integrated screen. The PAPP-A must be performed between 10 and 13 weeks, and the AFP QUAD must be performed between 15 and 22 weeks. (AFP QUAD includes AFP, chorionic gonadotropin, estriol, and inhibin-A).
Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube: Plain, red-top tube(s) or serum
gel tube(s)
Specimen Volume: 5 mL (minimum volume: 1
mL) of maternal serum
Collection Instructions:
Note: 1. Gestational age must be between 10 and 13 weeks (10 to 11 weeks is optimal).
2. Ultrasound dating of pregnancy is preferred.
