Methodology
Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)
(PCR is utilized pursuant to a license agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.)
Useful for detection of norovirus, which is a major cause of acute viral gastroenteritis in humans.
Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube: Tightly-sealing, leakproof sterile container #261 or clean vial from a Stool Collection Kit
Specimen Volume: A minimum of 100 mg of diarrheal (liquid or loose) stool
Collection Instructions:
- Formed stool is not acceptable
- Collect fresh, unpreserved liquid or loose stool.
- If specimen is collected in a bedpan or collection “hat”, patient should urinate into another container before stool specimen is collected.
- Label container with patient’s legal name, identification number, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
