Collect specimens as soon after the rash as possible. Detection is optimum with a collection of day one (1) through day three (3) of rash onset.

Specimen Requirements

 

Collection:

          Universal Viral Transport Media - #0075681

  • Nasopharyngeal swabs and throat swabs should be collected with commercial swab products designed for the collection of throat/nasopharyngeal specimens or flocked polyester fiber swabs. 
  • Cotton swabs are not acceptable
  • Swabs should be placed in 2 mL of standard viral transport medium (VTM) and should not be allowed to dry.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Immediately after collection, throat/nasopharyngeal swab specimen shoud be refrigerated at 2-8° C for up to 72 hours.

After 72 hours, freeze throat/nasopharyngeal swab specimen at -20° C and transport on dry ice.
