Important Note

  • This test replaces Direct Antigen, CSF
  • DOES NOT replace traditional Culture and Gram Stain, CSF

Note:

  • This test is performed on the last tube collected
  • Specimen must arrive within 2 hours of collection

Methodology

The FilmArray Meningitis/Encephalitis (ME) CSF, PCR Panel is a qualitative multiplexed nucleic acid based in vitro diagnostic test that detects the following organisms:

  • Escherichia coli K1
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Listeria moncytogenes
  • Neisseria meningitidis
  • Streptococcus agalactiae
  • Cytomegalovirus
  • Enterovirus
  • Herpes simplex virus 1
  • Herpes simplex virus 2
  • Human herpes virus 6
  • Human parechovirus
  • Varicella Zoster virus
  • Cryptococcus neoformans/gatti

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 2 hours of collection.

Container/Tube: Sterile tube(s)-Anticoagulant tube is not acceptable.

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of CSF

Collection Instructions:

  1. Aseptically collect 1 mL to 2 mL of CSF from lumbar puncture. Contamination with normal flora from skin or other body surfaces must be avoided.
  2. Divide CSF into 1 to 4 screw-capped, sterile tubes.
  3. Tubes should be numbered in order of draw 1, 2, 3, 4 with tube #1 representing first portion of specimen collected.
