  2. Submission of more than one specimen is not recommended.
  3. For pediatric patients with severe diarrhea, a U-bag collection system may be placed over the rectum and/or urethra as applicable to prevent urine contamination.

C. difficile test Algorithm

Methodology

TECHLAB rapid membrane enzyme immunoassay for the detection of Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile toxins A and B in stool specimens. This test is useful fo the rapid diagnosis of Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea (CDAB) and pseudomembranous colitis.

Specimen Requirements

 

Type 6 (soft) or 7 (liquid) on the Bristol Stool Chart

Fresh liquid or soft stool  in a sterile container

  1. Supplies -  Sterile Container #6004913
  2. Volume - Walnut size or 2 mL
  3. Collection Instructions:
    • Collect fresh, unpreserved liquid or soft stool.
    • If specimen is collected in a bedpan or collection “hat”, patient should urinate into another container before collecting stool specimen.
    • Transfer stool to a sterile, leak proof container. Those portions of stool containing blood and mucus are especially significant and should be selected.
    • Label container with patient’s legal name, date, collection time and initials of the collector.
    • Refrigerate after collection.
    • Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible.
  4. Stability - up to 72 hours at 2 - 8° C

 

Liquid or soft stool preserved in Cary Blair (CB) Transport Media

  1. Supplies - Cary Blair Transport Medium
  2. Volume - Fill CB Transport Media with stool until container contents rise to the red line.
  3. Collection Instructions:
    • Transfer stool into CB Transport Media. Those portions of stool containing blood and mucus are especially significant and should be selected.
    • Tighten cap and mix well.
    • Label container with patient legal name, date, collection time and initials of the collector.
    • Refrigerate after collection.
    • Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible.
  4. Stability - up to 72 hours at 2 - 8° C

 

Specimen Rejection

Reject Due To:

  • Stool at ambient temperature > 2 hours
  • Stool refrigerated > 3 days
  • Specimens submitted in formalin r polyvinyl alcohol
  • Rectal swab
  • Contaminated with toilet water or urine
  • Specimens from infants less than 2 years of age
  • Specimens submitted in a diaper
