Reference Values

Dependent upon site/source of specimen.
Critical value (automatic call-back): bacterium present on cerebrospinal fluid or other sterile body fluid

Note:

  1. Gram stain is not as sensitive or specific as culture.
  2. If organism identification and susceptibilities are desired, a culture must be requested.
  3. False-negative results occur with Gram stains due to low number of organisms present in the specimen.
