Test Code GIP BD Max Enteric - Parasite Panel

Important Note

**ONLY use a Clean Vial for specimen collection

Substances and medications such as mineral oil, barium, bismuth, antibiotics, anti-malarials, and non-absorbable antidiarrheal preparations interfere with the detection of intestinal protozoa.  Intestinal protozoa may be undetectable for one to several weeks after administration of any of these substances.  Specimen collection should be performed after seven days in the case of antibiotics or barium.

  • Stool Collection Kits should be stored in the dark at room temperature.
  • Always examine the expiration date before use.
  • Do not use expired collection vials.
  • Do not collect specimen from a toilet bowl.
  • Do not contaminate the specimen with urine.
  • Transfer specimen to collection vials immediately.

Methodology

The Enteric Parasite Panel test method is a Multiplex PCR and tests for 3 common parasitic gastrointestinal pathogens that cause infectious diarrhea.

  • Giardia lamblia
  • Cryptosporidium spp.
  • Entamoeba histolytica

  3. Record patient name, identification number, source, date and time of collection and initials of the collector.
  4. Maintain and transport the specimen refrigerated if less than or equal to 24 hours using clean vial (non preserved).

_________________________________

  • Specimens can be preserved in 10% formalin by using a 1:4 ratio (i.e. 1 part specimen with 3 parts formalin). Mix specimen thoroughly with formalin and clearly label container as formalinpreserved stool alongside patient information. Alternatively, commercially prepared 10% formalin vials may also be used for collection.
