Methodology

Sudan IV Stain for Fat

Useful for detecting fat droplets in feces (suggestive of impaired absorption).

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 2 hours of collection.

 

Container/Tube: Clean, dry, leakproof container(s)
Specimen Volume: Entire fresh stool specimen-Specimen contaminated with water or urine is not acceptable.
Collection Instructions:

Note:

  1. If specimen is collected in a bedpan or collection “hat”, patient should urinate into another container before stool specimen is collected.
  2. Do not collect specimen from toilet.
  3. Specimen in diaper is not acceptable. Stool material should be scraped into a clean, dry container. Pediatric patients with severe diarrhea may use a U-Bag collection system. Place U-Bag over urethra to prevent urine from contaminating specimen.
  4. Specimen source is required.
