Methodology
Tube Testing
The Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT) is useful for detecting antibodies and complement adsorbed to the surfaces of red blood cells in the body. This test is mainly used to investigate autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), hemolytic disease of the newborn, drug induced hemolysis, and alloimmune reactions to recently transfused cells.
Specimen Requirements
Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.
** Referal DAT can be accepted if specimen is > 24 hours old, but < 72 hours old. These will be resulted with a disclaimer.
Container/Tube: Pink-top (EDTA) “crossmatch” tube(s) or pink-top (EDTA) MICROTAINER®-Plain, red-top tube or serum gel tube is not acceptable.
Specimen Volume: 6 mL to 7 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL/pediatric: 0.5 mL in EDTA MICROTAINER®) of whole blood
Collection Instructions: Forward promptly in original tube(s)/MICROTAINER®.
