Methodology
Includes pH, pO2, pCO2, HCO3, base excess (BE), and O2 saturation.
Useful for assessing acid-base balance and pulmonary oxygen-gas exchange.
Specimen Requirements
Call Logan Health Medical Center Laboratory at 406-752-1737 if drawing patient off-site.
Specimen must arrive within 30 minutes of draw.
Container/Tube: Heparinized blood gas syringe
Specimen Volume: 1 mL (minimum volume: 40 mcL) of cord blood-Air bubble or clot is not acceptable.
Collection Instructions:
- Draw cord blood anaerobically into heparinized blood gas syringe immediately after delivery.
- Expel air bubbles and place on WET ICE IMMEDIATELY.
- Specimen must be analyzed with 1 hour of draw.
