Conventional Culture Technique

Includes Gram stain.

Specimen Requirements

Submit the following specimens:

      Bronchial brushing, bronchial lavage, bronchial washing or transtracheal aspirate in a sterile screw capped container.

Specimen Volume: > 1mL of bronchial specimen

Collection Instructions:

  1. Label container with patient’s legal name, date and actual time of collection
  2. Type of specimen

Bronchial Brushing

Collection Instructions:

  1. Label container with patient’s legal name, date and actual time of collection
  2. Type of specimen
  3. Aseptically cut off brush (without sheath) into a sterile container. Add 1 mL of non- bacteriostaic saline to specimen.

Reference Values

Normal respiratory flora

Normal flora includes alpha hemolytic Streptococcus (viridans group), Neisseria species, coag-negative Staphylococcus, and diptheroids.
