Specimen Requirements

 

**BOTH WHOLE BLOOD AND SERUM ARE REQUIRED

 

Whole blood

 

Specimen must arrive and be tested within 4 hours of collection, or within 24 hours if specimen refrigerated.

 

Container/Tube: Lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s) with HemogardTM lid - Preferred

Specimen Volume: 3 mL (minimum volume: 1 mL) of whole blood-

 

* Clotted, hemolyzed, or lipemic specimen or specimen with a hematocrit of <10% are not acceptable.

 

Collection Instructions:

  1. Invert tube(s) several times to mix blood. 
  2. Do not centrifuge.
  3. Forward promptly in original tube(s).

 

Serum

 

Serum Gel Tube - Collect 2 tubes

Container/Tube: Serum gel - Collect 2 tube(s)
Specimen Volume: 3 mL (minimum volume: 2 mL) of serum

Collection Instructions:

  1. Spin down within 2 hours of draw.
  2. Grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimen is not acceptable.
  3. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

 

Day(s) Test Set Up

C-reactive protein, quantitative: Monday through Sunday

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate: Monday through Sunday

Rheumatoid factor: Monday through Friday

ANTI-CCP (MAYO) - Send out testing - Monday through Saturday upon receipt

Specimen Stability

Ambient/Refrigerate >3 hours OK

Frozen - NO-EDTA whole blood
