Methodology
Immunoassay Antibody Detection
Includes AFP, chorionic gonadotropin, and estriol.
Useful for prenatal screening for neural tube defect and Down syndrome.
Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube: Plain, red-top tube(s) or serum gel tube(s)
Specimen Volume: 3 mL (minimum volume: 2 mL) of maternal serum
Collection Instructions:
- Gestational age must be between 15 and 22 weeks; 16 weeks is optimal, 16 to 18 weeks is second choice.
- Ultrasound dating of pregnancy is preferred.

Reference Values
An interpretive report will be provided.
All abnormal results are called to the attending physician on the day of testing, and are faxed upon request. Written reports are mailed.
