Important Note

This test should be ordered only when no other culture site listing fits the specimen.

Note:

  • Aspirated Body Fluids should be sent to the laboratory immediately after collection.
  • Specimen source is required for all specimens 

Methodology

Conventional Culture Technique

Includes Gram stain.

 

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Aspirate

Container/Tube: Sterile container(s)

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL (minimum volume: 0.1 mL) of aspirate

Collection Instructions:

  1. If aspirated in a syringe, replace needle with a sterile, rubber cap prior to transporting specimen.
  2. Label container/syringe with patient’s legal name, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

Body Fluid

Container/Tube: Sterile container(s)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) of body fluid

Collection Instructions:

  1. If aspirated in a syringe, replace needle with a sterile, rubber cap prior to transporting specimen.
  2. Label container/syringe with patient’s legal name, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

Swab

Container/Tube:BBL™ CultureSwab™, #46209
Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Collection Instructions:

  1. Use a sterile culture swab to obtain specimen.
  2. Insert swab into moist sponge in swab container to preserve specimen.
  3. Label container with patient’s legal name, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
