Test Code 00017 Cytology, Gastrointestinal Tract Brushing or Washing
Methodology
Includes direct smear slide preparation, 1 THIN PREP® preparation, cell block preparation (if adequate material), Papanicolaou staining, and microscopic cytologic examination.
Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
BRUSHING
Container/Tube: CYTOLYT® Preservative Fluid vial and 2 slides
Specimen Volume: Entire specimen
Collection Instructions:
Note: Do not apply excessive pressure when smearing material onto slide. Gently roll brush.
1. Using a lead pencil, label frosted end of 2 slides with patient’s full legal and date of birth.
2. Collect gastrointestinal brush specimen.
3. Prepare 2 smears by gently rolling brush across glass slide.
4. Immediately fix slides into Coplin Jar filled with 100% ethanol fixative.
5. Clip brush into vial of CYTOLYT® Preservative Fluid.
6. Label vial (not lid) with patient’s legal name, date of birth, specimen source, and date and time of collection.
Note: Specimen source, patient’s name, age, and sex are required.

WASHING
Container/Tube: CYTOLYT® Preservative Fluid vial
Specimen Volume: 5 mL of saline washings of lesion
Collection Instructions:
1. Collect saline washing of lesion.
2. Transfer washing to vial.
3. Label vial (not lid) with patient’s legal name, date of birth, specimen source, and date and time of collection.
Note: Specimen source, patient’s name, age, and sex are required.
