Test Code 00011 Cytology, Bronchoscopic Brushing

Methodology

Includes direct smear slide preparation and/or THIN PREP® preparation, cell block preparation (if appropriate), Papanicolaou staining, and microscopic cytologic evaluation.

Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: Coplin Jar filled with 100% Ethanol and CYTOLYT® Preservative Fluid vial and 2 slides

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

 

Note:

Crushed or air-dried smears are of limited diagnostic value. Gentle smearing and immediate fixation is imperative.

 

Collection Instructions:

1. Using a lead pencil, label 2 glass slides with patient’s full name and date of birth.

2. Collect brushing specimen.

3. Rotate brush gently yet rapidly onto clear portion of each glass slide. Avoid crushing material.

4. Immediately fix slides into the Coplin Jar filled with100% ethanol fixative.

5. Clip brush into vial of CYTOLYT® Preservative Fluid.

6. Label vial (not lid) with patient’s legal name, date of birth, specimen source, and date and time of collection.

 

Note: Specimen source, patient’s name, age, and sex are required.
