Methodology

Includes Papanicolaou stain and microscopic cytologic examination.

Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: 4 to 6 slides

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Collection Instructions:

1. Gently express only nipple and subareolar area of any secretions which may be lying in collection ducts.

If no secretion appears at nipple with this gentle compression, do not manipulate further.
2. Allow a “pea-size” drop of fluid to collect on nipple tip.

3. Wipe first drop away.
4. Express a second drop and smear on a glass slide by pulling slide across nipple.
5. Spray-fix slide immediately with Cytospray® fixative. Do not allow smear to dry prior to fixation.

IMMEDIATE fixation is imperative for accurate cytologic evaluation.

6. Label glass slides with patient’s legal name, date of birth, right or left breast, and date and time of collection.
