Methodology
Includes Papanicolaou stain and microscopic cytologic examination.
Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube: 4 to 6 slides
Specimen Volume: Entire specimen
Collection Instructions:
1. Gently express only nipple and subareolar area of any secretions which may be lying in collection ducts.
If no secretion appears at nipple
with this gentle compression, do not manipulate
further.
2. Allow a “pea-size” drop of fluid to collect on
nipple tip.
3. Wipe first drop away.
4. Express a second drop and smear on a glass slide by pulling
slide across nipple.
5. Spray-fix slide immediately with Cytospray®
fixative. Do not allow
smear to dry prior to fixation.
IMMEDIATE fixation is imperative for accurate cytologic evaluation.
6. Label glass slides with patient’s legal name, date of birth, right or left breast, and date and time of collection.
Note: Specimen source (right or left breast), patient’s name, age, and sex are required.
